Getting Your Licence

Before you think of getting behind the wheel, you’re going to have to learn the road rules and get your Class C Learner Licence.  To apply for your Class C Learner Licence in Queensland, you must be at least 16 years of age.

Steps for Getting Your Learner Licence

Step 1 -
Learn Your Rules

In order to get your Learner Licence you’re going to need to pass a road rules test.  You can get all of the information you need in the ‘Your keys to driving in Queensland’ book. This is a comprehensive guide to licences and road rules produced by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.  You can either download sections of 'Your keys to driving in Queensland' for free from the Department of Transport and Main Roads website, or you can purchase the book from RACQ branches or the RACQ online shop.
Step 2 -
Prepare Your Documents

Before you go to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, make sure you’ve got all the right stuff:

  • Complete the Driver Licence Application / Renewal form.
  • Get three forms of identity ready. These can include a birth certificate, Australian passport, your school photo ID card or financial institution debit / credit card.
Step 3 -
Practice
Do you really know all the road rules?  Don’t take a chance if you’re not sure; use our online practice learner test which is just like the real thing!
Step 4 -
Apply

Apply for your licence at a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre.  You will need to take along the application form and three forms of ID.  You will then need to:

  • Pass an eyesight test
  • Declare that you are medically fit to learn to drive
  • Pay the road rules test fee and pass
  • Pay the required learner licence fee
Step 5 -
Get Your L Plates
Once you’ve got your licence, go to any RACQ branch, show your free2go membership card and get a FREE set of L Plates.
Step 6 -
Start Learning

You’re going to need to complete and record 100 hours of supervised driving experience.  Check out free2go's online resource for learner drivers, Learn2go for some great tips, suggested learner drives and a Department of Transport and Main Roads approved online learner logbook.

When learning to drive, you must:

  • Clearly display L-plates at the front and the rear of the vehicle
  • Be accompanied by someone who has held an open licence for at least a year
  • Carry your Learner Licence with you
