Until now you may have learned how to be a safe road user as a pedestrian, cyclist, public transport user or car occupant from your family and friends or through school or public education programs. Becoming a licensed driver means you take on a serious level of accountability and responsibility for your actions out there on the road.

Being a safe driver is more than knowing enough road rules and performing car control skills to pass a licence test. It is a recognition of hazards and awareness of risks, which develop with experience as you progress through a safe life of motoring.

Important points you need to consider before learning to drive are as follows:
· You must get a learner licence before learning to drive a car.
· You can apply for a learner licence when you are at least 16 years old.
· You should buy a copy of "Your Keys to Driving in Queensland" which is a guide to help learner drivers get ready to drive. It also contains questions that you may find in your written road rules test.

Applying for a Learners Licence

To obtain your learner licence you will need to visit a driver licence-issuing centre and do the following:

I. Complete an application form for a learner licence. Queensland Transport advises that when applying for a learner licence or driver licence you will need to show proof of your identity. You will need to prove who you are and that no one else has a licence in your name by producing three original and current forms of identification, with at least one of these showing your signature. You also need to prove your date of birth and where you live.

This can be done by showing proof of where you live such as an Australian Taxation Office tax file number confirmation (valid up to two years from date of issue), or by completing a Queensland Residency Declaration Form. For a full list of acceptable proof of identification documents please click here

II. Queensland Transport advises that you will need to pass a road rule test, which consists of 30 multiple-choice questions.
