Important points you need to consider before learning to ride are as follows:

  • You must get a learner licence before learning to ride a motorcycle.
  • You can apply for a learner licence when you are at least 16 years and 6 months old.
  • You should buy a copy of "Your keys to driving in Queensland" which is a guide to help learner drivers get ready to drive. It also contains questions that you may find in your written road rules test.

    Applying for a Learners Licence

To obtain your learner licence you will need to visit a driver licence-issuing centre and do the following:

    I. Complete an application form for a learner licence. Queensland Transport advises that when applying for a learner licence or driver licence you will need to show proof of your identity. You will need to prove who you are and that no one else has a licence in your name by producing three original and current forms of identification, with at least one of these showing your signature. You also need to prove your date of birth and where you live. This can be done by showing proof of where you live such as mobile or bank statement, or by completing the Queensland Residency Declaration Form F4208.

II. Queensland Transport advises that you need to pass a written road rule test, which consists of 30 multiple-choice questions including questions specific to motorcycles.

    Conditions for Learner Licence holders:

On successfully obtaining your learner licence remember that:
  • You must always ride with someone who has held a current open motorcycle licence for at least one year.
  • If the person is a pillion or sidecar passenger they must have held a current open licence for at least two years.
  • You must obey any conditions shown on the licence, e.g., wearing spectacles or contact lenses
  • You may only ride a motorcycle that is 250cc or less
  • The learner licence is valid for one year.
  • You must always carry your learner licence when you ride and show it immediately to a police officer upon request.
  • Never drink alcohol and then ride. The maximum Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) permitted for a learner driver under 25 years of age is Zero.
