Your age will determine how long you must hold your provisional licence before getting an open licence.

If you are:

  • Under 23 years of age, you must hold your licence for three years continuously;
  • At least 23 years but not 24 years of age, you must hold your licence for two years continuously;
  • 24 years of age and over, you must hold your licence for one year continuously.

    Holding a licence for the minimum continuous period means you must renew the licence before it expires and the licence must not be cancelled or suspended for any length of time during that period. Should this happen, the minimum continuous period is calculated from the day the new licence is issued to you, or if the licence was suspended, the day the suspension is lifted.
