Legal Advice

Queensland Transport advises that if you commit a traffic offence anywhere in Australia you may gain demerit points against your traffic history. Penalties vary according to the type of traffic offence and increase depending on the severity and life-threatening nature of the traffic offence.

Demerit points are recorded against your traffic history and are backdated to the day the offence happened, once you pay the fine or have been dealt with by a court. If you gain excessive demerit points, you will receive a letter from Queensland Transport advising you that your licence will be cancelled and informing you of your options and the actions you must take.

Remember: As a learner or provisional licence holder, you are only given a limited number of points.
