Hazard Perception Test

When you’re driving, you need to observe the environment and quickly respond to hazards that appear unexpectedly.  You never know when a pedestrian is going to step out in front of your car. The Hazard Perception Test evaluates your ability to anticipate and respond to hazards and is an essential element of your licence requirements.

Before taking the test, you will be able to view an instruction video and take a practice test.  For more information, visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads website.Hazard Perception Test

The best way to sharpen your responses is to practice.  In general, here are some tips for avoiding hazards when driving:

  • Maintain a safe distance from vehicles in front.
  • Slow down or move away from potential hazards as appropriate for the traffic and road conditions.
  • Manage the space between your vehicles and other vehicles to keep out of other drivers’ blind spots in multi-lane traffic
  • Anticipate driving events, such as children walking on the road around schools, trolleys close to shopping centres.

The Hazard Perception Test is only available online and you will be required to pay a fee after you have successfully completed the test.
