Getting your L's

Step 1: Enrol in PrepL

Before you get your learners licence, you need to pass a road rules test, this is also known as PrepL. You can find all of the information you need to pass the test in the Your keys to driving in Queensland book. This is a comprehensive guide to licences and road rules produced by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

To enrol in PrepL and complete your learning and assessment you will need to:

An alternative option if not proceeding with PrepL is to sit a written road rules test. Find out more.

Step 2: Provide proof of identify

You will still be required to provide evidence of your identity before you can be issued with a class C learner licence. You can do this at any stage of your Prep L enrolment. If you do this before passing PrepL, you will be able to apply for your licence online and get it in the mail. A driver licence receipt can be printed out to immediately start supervised driving.

Step 3: Get your L Plates

Once you’ve got your licence, go to any RACQ store, show your Free2Go membership card and you’ll get a complimentary set of L plates.

Step 4: Get ready to drive

Now you’ve got your Ls it’s time to complete and record 100 hours of supervised driving experience. An easy way to record your hours is on our free RACQ Learner Driver app.

Step 5: Start driving!

When you’re learning how to drive, you need to:

  • Clearly display your L plates at the front and the rear of the vehicle you’re driving
  • Be accompanied by someone who has held an open licence for at least a year
  • Carry your Learner Licence with you at all times
