There are just a few things you need to do before you can get your learners licence. To apply for Ls in Queensland, you need to be at least 16 years old.
Getting your L's
Step 1: Learn the rules
Before you get your learners licence, you need to pass a road rules test. You can find all of the information you need to pass the test in the ‘Your keys to driving in Queensland’ book. This is a comprehensive guide to licences and road rules produced by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. You can download sections of the guide for free from the Department of Transport and Main Roads website.
Step 2: Prepare your documents
Before you go to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, make sure you’ve got all the right stuff.
Step 3: Practice
Practice makes perfect! You can use our online practice learner test to make sure you’re ready on the day.
Step 4: Apply
You can apply for your licence at a Department of Transport and Main Roads customer service centre.
You will need to take along the application form and three forms of ID.
Before you get your Ls, you will need to:
- Declare that you are medically fit to learn to drive
- Pay the road rules test fee
- Pass the road rules test
- Pay the required learner licence fee

Step 5: Get your L Plates
Once you’ve got your licence, go to any RACQ store, show your Free2Go membership card and you’ll get a complimentary set of L plates.
Step 6: Start learning to drive
Now you’ve got your Ls it’s time to complete and record 100 hours of supervised driving experience. An easy way to record your hours is on our free Learn2go mobile app .
When you’re learning how to drive, you need to:
- Clearly display your L plates at the front and the rear of the vehicle you’re driving
- Be accompanied by someone who has held an open licence for at least a year
- Carry your Learner Licence with you at all times
