Now that you’ve got your Ls, the best way to become a safe and responsible driver is to practice as much as you can and squeeze in a few professional lessons along the way.

Before you can go for your practical driving test, you need to complete and record 100 hours of supervised practical driving experience over a minimum of 12 months. These hours need to be logged in an official learner logbook and submitted to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Our Learn2go mobile app helps you record your 100 hours quickly and easily so you get P plates sooner.

The mobile app syncs with your Learn2go online learner logbook which is recognised by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. And best of all, it’s free for Queensland Learners.

Find Driving Instructors

The Queensland Government are allowing the first 10 hours of lessons with an accredited driving school instructor, to count as 30 hours in your logbook. When you want to start driving lessons and are looking for a driving instructor, don’t assume cheapest is best.

As well as price, you also need to check:

  • The driver trainer’s licence and experience
  • How long a 'lesson' is
  • Whether your driver trainer will monitor your progress using an experience log
  • Whether they follow a structured approach with defined objectives
  • If they are an approved RACQ Driving School

Register as a supervisor

RACQ recognises the importance of giving supervisors the support they need to provide young drivers with advice and practical skills.  As a supervisor, you are about to play an important role in their life. As a supervisor, you should be a safe, experienced and competent driver and be up to date with current Queensland road rules. You must have held an open licence for at least one year for the class of vehicle you are teaching your learner to drive i.e. manual or automatic.

RACQ Driver Education Program

Your role as a supervisor is to help the learner driver gain as much experience as possible before they start driving unsupervised. So before teaching a learner how to drive, you should ensure that the driving habits and attitudes you have developed over the years are safe, in line with Queensland road rules and suitable to pass on to your learner. The RACQ offers a full day course for licensed drivers who want to refresh their knowledge and skills, and have confidence in their ability to advise and instruct a learner driver.  The RACQ Driver Education Program  includes:
  • classroom theory
  • on-road practice and two in-car driving sessions (assessing a driver's current strengths and weaknesses, and coaching the driver in correct techniques and routines)
  • tailored courses to suit the driver’s specific requirements
  • a detailed written report
  • complimentary road safety workbook

For booking information call RACQ Driver Education on 1800 680 039, or email driveassist@racq.com.au.

Download the RACQ Learner Logbook App

The RACQ Learner Logbook App can be used as a record that the learner has completed the mandatory 100 hours driving experience including at least 10 hours night driving experience. As a supervisor, you are responsible for approving each drive entry a learner completes with you.

Lessons with an accredited driving instructor will reduce your 100 hours logbook requirement. A one-hour lesson with the instructor will count towards three hours in your learner logbook (up to a maximum of 30 hours, 10 x one-hour sessions).
