Now that you’ve got your Ls, the best way to become a safe and responsible driver is to practice as much as you can and squeeze in a few professional lessons along the way.

Before you can go for your practical driving test, you need to complete and record 100 hours of supervised practical driving experience over a minimum of 12 months. These hours need to be logged in an official learner logbook and submitted to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

We have an online resource to help you and your supervisor go through the steps of learning to drive and logging your hours. Check out Learn2go for some great tips and features to help you along the way, including:

  • A Department of Transport and Main Roads approved online logbook, so you don’t have to worry about making a mistake, or losing your hours. You can also access your logbook on your phone with the RACQ Learn2go app.
  • Practical skills videos with tips on driving manoeuvers, like how to do a hill start.

When you’re choosing a driving instructor, don’t assume that the cheapest option is best. Price is important, but we also recommend you check the driving instructor’s licence and experience.

If you need help finding the right driving school, we’ve done some research for you. Here’s a list of independently owned and operated RACQ Approved Driving Schools throughout Queensland:

RACQ Driver Education Program

Your role as a supervisor is to help the learner driver gain as much experience as possible before they start driving unsupervised. So before teaching a learner how to drive, you should ensure that the driving habits and attitudes you have developed over the years are safe, in line with Queensland road rules and suitable to pass on to your learner.
The RACQ offers a full day course for licensed drivers who want to refresh their knowledge and skills, and have confidence in their ability to advise and instruct a learner driver.
The RACQ Driver Education Program  includes:
  • classroom theory
  • on-road practice and two in-car driving sessions (assessing a driver's current strengths and weaknesses, and coaching the driver in correct techniques and routines)
  • tailored courses to suit the driver’s specific requirements
  • a detailed written report
  • complimentary road safety workbook
For booking information call RACQ Driver Education on 1800 680 039, or email

Lessons with an accredited driving instructor will reduce your 100 hours logbook requirement. A one-hour lesson with the instructor will count towards three hours in your learner logbook (up to a maximum of 30 hours, 10 x one-hour sessions).
